I-5, Empire/Burbank and Railroad Tracks
Location: Burbank, CA
Client: Caltrans
This project widened the freeway and added HOV lanes in each direction between Magnolia and Cohasset. It included extensive retaining wall construction, MSE wall construction, secant wall construction, concrete box girder bridge widening and entire bridges, and steel girder railroad overhead construction. Security Paving performed JPCP concrete paving, JPCP RSC concrete paving, HMA and RHMA paving using 55-hour closures and reconstruction, drainage and utility relocation work, pipe jacking large diameter RCP work for drainage and communication utilities, water line, recycled water line, pump station, extensive shoring walls using soldier piles, steel beam bracing, and tie back systems.
The project also included construction of a railroad shoofly, new mainline and siding, three interchange reconstructions and two with entire realignment, and two grade separations. Our team completed three bonus stages, all completed with full bonus awards.
Additionally, Caltrans directed Security Paving to reconstruct the freeway lanes between Verdugo and Magnolia using 55-hour weekend two-lane restrictions to complete full freeway lane replacements in just eight weekends. We used onsite portable concrete batch plant for concrete projects and volumetric trucks for slab and lane replacements under 55-hour weekend closures.
Security Paving developed a plan to modify and accelerate the stage 3 work into earlier stages to allow use of excavated materials needed in initial work. Additionally, we were able to accelerate off-ramp construction and create a temporary ramp shoofly to reduce impacts to freeway and local streets.
