I-5 LA Tunnel Emergency Repairs
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Client: Caltrans
In October 2007, a crash in the truck bypass tunnel on I-5 in Sylmar started a massive fire. The fire caused significant damage to the structural stability of the tunnel. Governor Schwarzenegger declared the situation an emergency. Security Paving responded to this emergency by receiving the plans on a Friday and submitted a bid the next Monday morning. Approximately 90 feet of the tunnel adjacent to the accident site had to be entirely replaced. Precast girders were used to replace the ceiling of the damaged section. The original contract allowed for 30 days to complete the needed repairs. Security Paving was able to complete the project in just 17 days and received a bonus for completing the work early.
